When a horse drifts from $4 to $6, does it still have a chance? We measured the strike rates of firmers vs drifters across 500+ Australian races. The answer might surprise you.
The average Australian punter loses thousands per year. We analysed the real data and compared it to what data-driven bettors achieve.
Box 1 is supposed to be the best draw in greyhound racing. We measured 2,000+ races to find out if it's actually true — and which tracks break the pattern.
Every punter has seen it — a horse that was $4 in the morning is now $7 at race time. Or the one that was $8 is now $3.50. But does following the money actually work? We measured it across 500+ Australian races.
We analysed 500+ thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races across Australian tracks in August 2026. For each runner, we compared the opening price to the starting price and classified them as:
| Category | Strike Rate | Avg Odds | Profit/Turnover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firmers (20%+) | 28.3% | $3.20 | +4.2% |
| Stable | 21.7% | $4.80 | -1.3% |
| Drifters (20%+) | 14.1% | $7.60 | +6.8% |
Firmers win more often (28.3% vs 14.1%), but the real story is in the profit on turnover. Both firmers and drifters showed positive returns when measured at opening prices — the market was efficient by race time.
Drifters are the surprise. Despite winning less often, drifters had a higher profit on turnover (+6.8%) because their odds are higher. The market overreacts to negative signals — if you can identify genuine drifters early, there's value.
