Same-game multis are the most popular betting product in Australian sport, and bookmakers love them for a reason. The compounding margin on a four-leg SGM can exceed 20%, but a small subset of combinations have enough correlated mispricing to flip the expected value positive. Here's how the maths works.

Why everyone plays them and nobody understands the maths
Same-game multis are the most popular betting product in Australia right now. Every bookmaker pushes them hard — Sportsbet, Ladbrokes, PointsBet, Bet365, Neds, they all have dedicated SGM builders. The NRL finals are weeks away, and the SGM promos are already ramping up.
Here's what most punters miss: the maths behind an SGM is fundamentally different from a standard multi, and the bookmaker's margin compounds with every leg you add. Understanding this is the difference between playing for fun and paying an invisible tax.
How bookmakers price SGMs
A standard multi across different matches assumes each leg is independent. That's roughly true — the outcome of the Bulldogs-Rabbitohs H2H has no bearing on whether the Storm cover the line against the Cowboys.
An SGM collapses that assumption. Every leg comes from the same match, and many of those legs are correlated. A team leading at halftime is more likely to win. A team dominating possession is more likely to have a player score two or more tries. These are not independent events.
Most AU bookmakers price each leg of an SGM off the same underlying match model without adjusting for correlation. The at any given NRL round shows you the base prices — the SGM builder then combines them. When Sportsbet lets you build a four-leg NRL SGM, they're multiplying four independent probabilities together. But the real joint probability of correlated legs is higher than the product of the marginals.
This is the gap. When a team is favoured by 12 points and you combine that result with their star centre to score a try, you're backing two outcomes that are positively correlated. The centre is more likely to score when his team dominates possession and territory. The bookmaker's price doesn't fully account for that.
Where the compounding margin actually hurts
Every single-leg market carries a margin — typically 4-6% for a standard NRL H2H. That margin compounds across legs in a multi. With two legs, you're paying the margin twice. With four legs, the combined margin can reach 15-25%.
The EV calculator makes this concrete. If each leg has a 5% margin, a three-leg SGM has an effective margin of roughly 14.3% — not 15%, because the compounding isn't quite additive, but close enough that the difference doesn't matter for your bankroll.
Most recreational punters never think about this. They see a four-leg SGM paying $12 and think the odds look generous. They don't realise the true probability of all four legs hitting might support a fair price of $14 or $15.
Correlation: the one place SGMs can work in your favour
Correlation is the only structural reason an SGM can offer better value than a same-size standard multi. When two outcomes are positively correlated, the joint probability is higher than the product of the individual probabilities — and if the bookmaker doesn't adjust for that, the SGM is mispriced in your favour.

Practical example from recent rounds: the Storm were 10-point favourites at home with the league's best defensive record. The SGM of Storm H2H + Jahrome Hughes 8+ tackles + over 38.5 total points was priced at $3.20 across several books. The correlation between a Storm dominant win, Hughes accumulating tackles in a game with plenty of defensive sets, and a high-scoring affair was genuine. The player props data showed Hughes had hit 8+ tackles in 8 of his last 10 starts when Melbourne won by 8+.
That combination had positive expected value. Most don't.
The trap legs that bookmakers love you to include
Some SGM legs look appealing but destroy your value. The most common: combining a team win with that team's top try scorer to cross first. The correlation feels intuitive but the maths doesn't back it up. The first-try market has a margin north of 20% at most AU books. Stacking it onto an SGM amplifies that edge against you.
Another: over/under total points combined with a specific team's try-scoring props. If the game goes over, it doesn't mean any individual player scores more — the points could come from penalty goals, opposition errors, or bench players crossing. The perceived correlation is weaker than punters assume.
The bet tracker is useful here. Track your SGM results separately from your other bets. After 50 or so SGMs, the pattern becomes obvious: the legs with genuine correlation (team dominance plus individual performance) hit at higher rates than the ones you threw in for value.
When to play an SGM and when to walk away
Most SGMs are negative expected value products. The compounding margin ensures that. But a small subset — maybe 5-10% of the combinations you could build — have enough correlated mispricing to flip the EV positive.
The discipline is in knowing which ones those are. Use the arbitrage calculator to check whether the SGM price is better than you could construct from individual leg prices at different books. If it's not, the SGM is pure margin.
